Job Summary
The successful candidate will lead the Process Development team, which develops large-scale closed-system processes for the NEO-STIM-based portfolio of BioNTech US cell therapy products, including lead candidate BNT221. NEO-STIM is a proprietary induction protocol used to target either private or shared neoantigens.  The candidate will work in a matrixed fashion with research teams of the Cell Therapy Unit, as well as the Technical Operations, Regulatory and Quality groups to prioritize, evaluate and implement process improvements for our cell therapy programs.  The candidate is expected to act as a strategic leader collaborating closely with technical operations to ensure our processes can accommodate commercial phase.  This position reports to a Director, T cell Immunology.
 
Primary responsibilities include:
  • Lead cross functional process development team with 6 FTEs reporting directly into this position and multiple others indirectly
  • Manage projects related to process improvement projects to support early and later-stage clinical development of autologous, neoantigen-specific T cell therapies
  • Collaborate with a strategic cross-functional team to prioritize and manage process improvement projects, and to implement process changes upon completion
  • Support manufacturing teams by functioning as SME for program specific processes
  • Support tech transfer of process changes and to new sites
  • Manage projects conducted at external collaborators and/or CDMOs
  • Contribute broadly to scientific enhancement of the cell therapy programs and other research programs in the organization
  • Present results at management and program team meetings
 
Requirements
  • Ph.D. in T cell immunology or related discipline, and 5 years of relevant work experience with strong knowledge of T cell biology, immuno-oncology, and cell therapy process development
  • Significant experience with large-scale, closed-system technologies for cell processing and culturing
  • Mastery of multicolor flow cytometry and other immune related assays
  • Experience with CMC and tech transfer
  • Proven ability to lead a cross functional team and effectively manage direct reports
  • Proven ability to contribute to program strategies
  • Excellent attention to detail, excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Enjoys solving challenging scientific questions in a fast-paced environment
  • Independent, flexible, self-motivated, and the ability to work well with others
